Guest Speakers - Dr Yeap Gik Hong
Dr Yeap Gik Hong joined KDU College (PG) Sdn Bhd in December 2009 as a lecturer and subsequently being promoted as the Programme Leader in August 2010 before take on the role of Academic Department Head of Engineering Department in the School of Engineering, Science and Technology at KDU College Penang in June 2013. He received his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Polytechnic (POLIMAS) in 2001. In conjunction with the 15th Convocation of POLIMAS, he received the Best Engineering Graduate Award from the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’Adzam Shah. After working in Singapore for 1.5 years, he further his study to UK and received BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Systems from the University of Lincoln in 2003 with First Class Honours. He also won the Valeac Prize for the Best Control Project on a Final Year for his academic work in the university. He later obtained his MSc Advanced Materials and Manufacturing from the University of Hull, UK in 2006 with Distinction. In September 2005, he was awarded the PhD Studentship and obtained his PhD in Electronics Engineering degree from the University of Hull in 2010.
Dr Yeap is a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK, Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE), USA, a Graduate Member of Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and Graduate Engineers of Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). He is also a Committee Member of Malaysia TRIZ Innovation Association (MyTRIZ) and IEM Electronics Engineering Technical Division (eETD). He is a certified International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) Level 3 Practitioner, MyTRIZ Level 3 Practitioner and MyTRIZ Level 1 Instructor. He has actively promoting the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) among his students with the intention to improve the problem solving skills, creativity and innovation level of the students. In 2014, Engineering students and staff at KDU College have won two international awards in the 4th Global Competition/Exhibition in Systematic Innovation (GCSI2014) at San Jose State University, California, USA and one regional award in the MyTRIZ Competition 2014 – Prism of Possibilities with TRIZ by employing the TRIZ methodology in their projects.
With his wide academic background, Dr Yeap has handled a wide range of courses such as Manufacturing Analysis, Engineering Product Development, Fundamentals of Energy Systems, Research, Analysis & Presentation, Engineering Materials, Mechanical Principles & Applications, Robotic Technology, etc. While handling the Engineering Product Development module, he has managed to guide his students to win the 1st Runner-up of the Business Idea Category in the MSC Malaysia - IHL Business Plan Competition 2010/2011 and Merit Prize of the Business Plan Category in the MSC Malaysia - IHL Business Plan Competition 2011/2012.
Besides the administrative and academic responsibilities, Dr Yeap is also active in research. He has published a number of journals and conference papers in the renowned international journals and conferences. His research interests include physics of semiconductor, robotics, renewable energy, industrial automation, etc.
